1. What is a My Number Insurance Card? 

Your My Number Card can be used in place of a health insurance card.

A My Number Card is an IC chip-equipped identification card essential for accessing various services in Japan. By registering your My Number Card as an insurance card, you can use it in place of a conventional health insurance card. 

My Number Cards that have been registered are called “My Number insurance cards.” By the end of October 2024, around 80% of people had registered their My Number Card for use as a health insurance card.

If you have a My Number Card, but have not yet registered it as a health insurance card:

There are three ways to register your My Number Card as a health insurance card. 

1. Apply using a card reader with facial recognition.
   You can register at a pharmacy or medical institution by placing your My Number Card on a card reader with facial recognition.
2. Apply through Mynaportal.
   You can register by logging in to Mynaportal on your smartphone or computer.
3. Apply using a Seven Bank ATM.

2. Can I Still Use My Health Insurance Card? 

New health insurance cards will no longer be issued. However, if your health insurance card is valid as of December 2, 2024, you can continue using it for up to one year. 

*If your health insurance card becomes invalid before December 1, 2025, or if you change jobs or move, you can only use your card until its expiration date. 

Also, people who do not have a My Number Card will receive an “Eligibility Certificate” in the mail, which they can use to continue accessing medical care.
